How to Compare Serving Sizes on Greens Powder Labels

A scoop of one greens powder might weigh 8 grams. Another might weigh 22 grams. Both containers could be labeled "30 servings," and both could be priced similarly. Without doing some basic math, comparing these two products by price or by the ingredient list alone tells you almost nothing about what you are actually getting.
Why Scoop Size Is Not a Useful Unit of Comparison
Manufacturers choose their own serving sizes. There is no industry standard requiring a serving to weigh a particular amount. A company can define one scoop as 5 grams or 25 grams, and both are legal. This means that when you see a label claiming "contains 500mg of ingredient X per serving," that figure is only meaningful once you know how heavy that serving actually is.
Two products might each list 500mg of the same ingredient per serving, but if one serving weighs 10 grams and the other weighs 20 grams, the concentrations are very different. You are getting the same absolute amount from a much larger portion in the second case, which also means you are consuming more of every other ingredient in that product to get there.
The only way to make a fair comparison is to normalize everything to a common unit. Milligrams per gram lets you strip out the variable of scoop size entirely.
How to Read the Nutrition Facts Panel Correctly
Start with the serving size, listed at the top of the Nutrition Facts panel in grams. This is your baseline number. Every figure on that label, whether it is a weight listed in milligrams or a percentage, refers to that specific gram amount.
Next, note the total number of servings per container, and locate the net weight of the entire container, usually printed on the front or bottom of the packaging. Multiplying servings by serving weight should approximately equal the net weight. If those numbers do not line up, the label warrants closer scrutiny.
For each ingredient you want to evaluate, find its weight in milligrams. Divide that number by the serving size in grams to get milligrams per gram. For example, if a serving is 10 grams and contains 300mg of an ingredient, that ingredient makes up 30mg per gram of the powder. You can apply that same calculation to any other product, regardless of how large or small its scoop is.
Calculating Cost Per Gram
Once you have the serving weight in grams, calculating cost per gram is straightforward. Take the total price of the container and divide it by the net weight of the powder in grams. The result is your cost per gram.
For example:
- Container price: $40
- Net weight: 300 grams
- Cost per gram: $0.13
Run this calculation for each product you are comparing and you have a single number that lets you put them side by side. A cheaper sticker price on a smaller container can easily end up costing more per gram than a pricier but larger option. Conversely, a large container is not always the better value if the powder is heavily diluted to bulk up the weight.
If a manufacturer does not print the net weight in grams, you can convert ounces to grams by multiplying by 28.35. Most US packaging will include both units.
Working with Proprietary Blends
Many greens powders list a proprietary blend rather than individual ingredient weights. The label will show the total weight of the blend but not the amounts of each component within it. This makes per-ingredient comparison impossible for those specific components.
You can still calculate the cost per gram of the overall product and note how much of the total serving weight is proprietary versus fully disclosed. If a 10-gram serving contains a 2-gram proprietary blend and 8 grams of disclosed ingredients, the blend is a small fraction of the product. If the situation is reversed, you are paying for something you cannot fully evaluate from the label alone.
When individual ingredient amounts are disclosed, apply the same milligrams-per-gram calculation as you would with any other label. Full disclosure makes comparison straightforward. Partial disclosure limits it, and that limitation is worth factoring into your decision.
Putting the Numbers to Use
A practical side-by-side comparison might look like this:
- Product A: 10g serving, 200mg of ingredient X, costs $0.10 per gram overall. Ingredient X concentration: 20mg/g.
- Product B: 20g serving, 200mg of ingredient X, costs $0.08 per gram overall. Ingredient X concentration: 10mg/g.
Product B is cheaper per gram of total powder but delivers half the concentration of ingredient X per gram. Whether that matters depends on which ingredients you are prioritizing and how you plan to use the product.
The simplest way to run this comparison across multiple products is a plain table: products across the top, the ingredients you care about down the side, mg/g figures in each cell. The calculations take a few minutes and the patterns become visible immediately. No prior knowledge of nutrition science is required, only the label, a scale if you want to verify the net weight, and basic arithmetic.
Labels tell you what is in the container. Questions about what amounts are appropriate for your specific situation, or whether any ingredient suits your health needs, belong with a registered dietitian or your doctor. Label literacy helps you shop accurately. It is not a substitute for professional guidance on what to consume.
