When you shop for a hoodie or a t-shirt online, you can read the color, check the size chart, and look at the photos. What you cannot do is pick the garment up and feel how substantial it is. That is exactly the gap that gsm fills. Understanding what the number means turns a vague spec into a reliable buying signal.
What gsm Actually Measures
GSM stands for grams per square meter. It is a measurement of fabric density: how much a one-meter-by-one-meter piece of that fabric weighs. The figure has nothing to do with the finished garment's total weight. A large hoodie and a small t-shirt cut from identical fabric will have very different total weights but the same gsm.
What gsm tells you is how tightly the fibers are packed and, by extension, how thick the knit is. A higher number means more material per unit of area. That translates directly into a thicker hand feel, less see-through, more structure, and generally more warmth. A lower number means a lighter, drapier, often more breathable fabric.
The number is fabric-specific, not garment-specific. A 300 gsm cotton fleece and a 300 gsm French terry are both 300 gsm, but they feel and perform differently because of their knit structure. GSM is one dimension of comparison, not the only one.
Typical Ranges for Tees and Hoodies
For jersey knit t-shirts, the practical range runs roughly from 130 gsm on the very light end to around 220 gsm on the heavier side. Here is how that band breaks down in practice:
- 130 to 150 gsm: Very lightweight, sheer, and airy. These fabrics drape softly and are best suited to warm weather. Expect some transparency, especially in lighter colors.
- 150 to 180 gsm: The standard range for everyday tees. Comfortable across a broad range of temperatures, holds its shape reasonably well, and is opaque enough for most colors.
- 180 to 220 gsm: Heavier jersey. Noticeably more substantial in hand, less prone to clinging or distorting after washing, and better suited to cooler conditions. Often described as a midweight or premium tee fabric.
For hoodies and sweatshirts, the numbers are higher because these garments typically use a looped or brushed fleece construction rather than plain jersey. A common range is 280 gsm to 500 gsm or above.
- 280 to 320 gsm: Light sweatshirt weight. Works well as a layering piece or for mild weather. Less bulk, easier to pack.
- 320 to 400 gsm: The most common range for everyday hoodies. Enough weight to feel warm on its own in cool weather without being heavy to carry around.
- 400 gsm and above: Heavy fleece. These feel noticeably thick and warm, and they tend to hold their shape well over time. They are slower to dry after washing and bulkier to pack.
How Fiber Content Interacts with gsm
The gsm figure only makes sense relative to the fiber. Cotton and polyester have different densities, so a 300 gsm polyester fleece will feel different from a 300 gsm cotton fleece even though the fabric weight per area is the same. Cotton generally feels warmer and softer against the skin. Polyester tends to wick moisture and dry faster. Blends aim to balance these properties.
Fabric construction also matters. French terry, which has a looped back rather than a brushed one, tends to feel less plush than brushed fleece at the same gsm. Waffle knit sits at lower gsm numbers but traps air in its textured cells, giving warmth that the number alone would not suggest. When comparing two garments, try to compare like construction types, not just the raw gsm figure.
Using gsm to Compare Before You Buy
The most practical use of gsm is comparison shopping between garments you cannot hold. If one hoodie lists 320 gsm and another lists 420 gsm, you know the second will feel substantially thicker and warmer, all else being equal. If a tee is listed at 160 gsm and you have previously owned a 180 gsm shirt you found too thin, you can set a higher threshold for your next purchase.
Not every retailer lists gsm prominently, but it is increasingly common in product descriptions and fabric specification sections. When it is missing, the total garment weight listed in grams or ounces is not a substitute because it varies with garment size. If gsm is absent entirely, look for terms like "midweight," "heavyweight," or "lightweight" as rough proxies, though these are not standardized.
Fit also interacts with perceived weight. A very relaxed, oversized cut in a 280 gsm fabric can feel similar to a fitted cut in 320 gsm because the extra fabric pooling around the body adds thermal insulation. Consider both the gsm and the intended fit when judging warmth.
A Simple Rule for Choosing
For everyday summer tees, aim for 150 to 180 gsm. For a t-shirt you want to wear into cooler months or simply want to feel more substantial, look at 185 to 220 gsm. For a hoodie you plan to wear as an outer layer in mild weather, 300 to 360 gsm is a reasonable starting point. If you want something that functions as a standalone warm layer in cold weather, look at 400 gsm and above.
GSM does not tell you everything about a garment, but it gives you a concrete number to anchor comparisons that would otherwise rely entirely on subjective marketing language. Once you have a feel for the ranges, the number becomes one of the most reliable signals available when buying garments you have never touched.
