What IU, mg, and mcg Mean on Vitamin Labels

Walk through any supplement aisle and the labels seem to speak three different languages: one bottle lists a nutrient in IU, another in mg, and a third in mcg. All three are legitimate units of measure, but they describe different things, convert to each other in ways that are not always obvious, and can make side-by-side comparison genuinely confusing. Understanding what each unit actually represents removes most of that confusion.
The Two Weight-Based Units: mg and mcg
Milligrams (mg) and micrograms (mcg) are both units of mass within the metric system. One milligram is one-thousandth of a gram. One microgram is one-thousandth of a milligram, or one-millionth of a gram. The conversion between them is always the same, regardless of which nutrient is being measured:
- 1 mg = 1,000 mcg
- 1 mcg = 0.001 mg
On digital displays or older labels, micrograms may appear as "ug" rather than "mcg" because the Greek letter mu (µ) used in the official abbreviation µg does not always render correctly in plain text. The two abbreviations refer to the same unit.
Vitamins labeled in mg tend to be those needed in relatively larger amounts, such as vitamin C or the B vitamins niacin and B6. Vitamins labeled in mcg are those present in far smaller quantities, such as B12, folate, biotin, and vitamin K. Using mcg instead of mg for these nutrients simply avoids listing unwieldy decimals. A label reading 2.4 mcg of B12 is easier to parse than 0.0024 mg.
IU: A Unit of Biological Activity, Not Weight
The International Unit (IU) works differently. It does not measure mass. It measures a defined biological activity, and the amount of mass required to produce that activity varies depending on the specific substance and its form. The IU was developed at a time when pure chemical extraction was difficult and standardizing a consistent biological effect was more practical than standardizing weight. For nutrients that exist in multiple chemical forms with different potencies, it remained in use long after precise mass measurement became routine.
Vitamins A, D, and E have historically been labeled in IU because each occurs in more than one form, and those forms differ in potency. Vitamin A, for example, can come from retinol (found in animal sources) or from beta-carotene (found in plant sources), and the body converts beta-carotene less efficiently than it uses retinol directly. The IU system attempted to account for that difference by anchoring the unit to biological effect rather than mass.
Why IU Conversions Are Not Universal
This is the part that trips most people up: there is no single IU-to-mg or IU-to-mcg conversion factor. The conversion depends entirely on which vitamin you are working with, and in some cases on which form of that vitamin is being used.
The established reference conversions for the most commonly IU-labeled vitamins are:
- Vitamin D: 1 IU = 0.025 mcg, so 400 IU equals 10 mcg and 1,000 IU equals 25 mcg
- Vitamin A (as retinol): 1 IU = 0.3 mcg
- Vitamin A (as beta-carotene in supplements): 1 IU = 0.6 mcg
- Vitamin E (natural, d-alpha-tocopherol): 1 IU = 0.67 mg
- Vitamin E (synthetic, dl-alpha-tocopherol): 1 IU = 0.45 mg
Notice that the vitamin E conversion changes depending on whether the source is natural or synthetic. This distinction appears on ingredient lists as "d-alpha-tocopherol" versus "dl-alpha-tocopherol." When comparing vitamin E products, the unit alone does not tell the full story.
How Labels Are Changing
Regulatory updates to the US Nutrition Facts label, phased in starting around 2020, require manufacturers to list vitamins A and D in mcg rather than IU on the main Nutrition Facts panel. For dietary supplements, the rules allow IU to appear alongside mcg in parentheses during a transition period, which is why many current labels show both values: "25 mcg (1,000 IU)" for vitamin D, or "900 mcg RAE" for vitamin A. RAE stands for Retinol Activity Equivalents, a more precise measure that replaced the older IU convention in regulatory guidance for vitamin A.
Vitamin E labeling for supplements has not moved away from IU as quickly, so many products still lead with IU. Knowing the conversion factor listed above lets you compare products that use different conventions without guessing.
Practical Comparisons Across Products
When reading labels side by side, a few habits make comparisons straightforward. Always identify the unit before comparing numbers: 500 mcg and 500 mg are not remotely the same amount, and a label that looks larger may simply be using a smaller unit. If one label uses IU and another uses mcg for the same vitamin, apply the specific conversion for that nutrient rather than a generic factor. If a label lists both IU and mcg, use the mcg figure, since that is the standardized weight-based measure. And if a product lists vitamin E on its ingredient panel, note whether it is natural or synthetic before applying the conversion, because the two forms have different equivalence values.
When products list the same vitamin in different units, converting both to mcg or mg puts them on identical footing for comparison. The math is simple once the right conversion factor is in hand.
