Apple Lightning to 3.5 mm Headphone Jack Adapter

A 3.5 mm headphone jack on one end, a Lightning plug on the other. That is the whole of it: a short adapter from Apple that bridges the gap between wired audio gear and a Lightning port.

In practice, it means the headphones and earbuds already in the drawer stay useful. Plug the analogue end into a favourite pair of cans, or into an aux cable in the car, then plug the Lightning end into the phone or tablet. No pairing, no charging, no batteries to keep track of.

Compatibility is straightforward:

• Any Apple device with a Lightning connector running iOS 10 or newer, covering iPhone, iPad and iPod touch models.
• Any audio accessory terminating in a standard 3.5 mm plug.

Small enough to live on a keyring or in a coat pocket between uses.

One thing worth knowing is that the adapter passes audio only in one direction: out. It does not carry microphone input from analogue headphones back to the device, so voice calls and voice memos will default to the built-in microphone on the phone or tablet rather than a headset mic. For listening purposes that is irrelevant, but anyone expecting to use an older headset for hands-free calls should keep that in mind. The adapter also does not allow simultaneous charging, so if a long journey is involved it is worth topping up the device before setting out.

Because the adapter is so small it is genuinely easy to lose. A short loop of thin elastic or a cable tie attached through a bag zip pull keeps it accessible without hunting through a pocket each time. When comparing adapters of this kind the main thing to look for is whether the unit is made by Apple directly, since third-party versions vary in build quality and do not always maintain a stable connection over time. The Lightning end in particular takes repeated insertion and removal, so a firmly moulded collar at that joint is a good sign. The adapter suits anyone who already owns wired audio gear and has no particular reason to replace it, or who travels and prefers the simplicity of a passive, battery-free solution for audio on the go.
