Practice runs long on a Tuesday night, and the mouth guard stays in from the first whistle to the last. The Shock Doctor Gel Max is built for contact sports such as football, wrestling, boxing, lacrosse and basketball, in adult and youth sizing. Each guard uses a gel liner that molds to the shape of your teeth and gums, an exoskeletal shock frame across the outer surface, and a triple layer construction. Built-in breathing channels run through the body of the guard, and the material is plastic. A detachable football helmet strap is included.

The unibody design works with or without the strap, so leave it off for sports that do not use a helmet. Rinse the guard after use and store it dry.

To fit the guard, bring a pot of water to a boil and let it cool for about thirty seconds before submerging the guard for the time indicated on the packaging. Remove it, shake off the water, and place it in your mouth while it is still warm, biting down firmly and pressing the material against your teeth and gums with your fingers and tongue. Hold that position for the full recommended time before rinsing it under cold water to set the shape. If the fit feels off after your first attempt, the material can typically be remolded by repeating the process, so do not discard the guard after one imperfect try.

The gel liner here adds a layer of cushioning that a basic boil-and-bite guard without one will lack.
